강원도 홍천군 영귀미면은 인삼, 감자, 옥수수, 한우 등의 농축산업이 중심을 이루는 마을이지만, 인구 감소와 함께 아이들의 수가 눈에 띄게 줄었다. 그 결과 많은 학교가 폐교되었고, 분식점·문방구 등 아이들의 일상을 지탱하던 문화·여가 공간도 사라졌다.
이러한 상황 속에서 지역 주민들은 직접 대안을 만들었다. 먼저 학부모들이 주체가 되어 만든 ‘영귀미 돌봄터’는 홍천군 최초의 온종일 돌봄센터로, 초등학생들이 방과 후에 공부하고 놀고 쉴 수 있는 안전한 공간이 되었다. 이후 중학교에 진학한 아이들을 위해 문을 연 청소년공간 ‘꿈틀’은 주 4일 동안 운영되며, 밥을 먹고, 놀고, 쉬고, 서로를 만나며 성장할 수 있는 드문 장소가 되었다.
이번 전시는 바로 이 지점에서 출발한다. 《살아남는 중입니다》는 단지 어려움에 맞서는 이야기가 아니라, 무언가 사라지고 없어진 세계 속에서 새롭게 살아가는 방식들 — 다르게 살아가는 가능성들 — 에 대한 유쾌한 탐구다. 작가들은 자신만의 생존법을 나누고, 아이들과 주민들은 자신이 경험하는 세계 속에서 어떻게 적응하고 살아가는지를 상상해본다.
이 전시에서 말하는 ‘생존’은 단지 무겁거나 비관적이지만은 않다. 웃기고, 따뜻하고, 유치하거나 엉뚱하고, 때로는 유쾌할 수 있다. 그러나 그 안에는 우리가 살아가는 방식에 대한 중요한 질문이 담겨 있다. “우리는 지금 어디에서, 어떻게 살아남고 있을까?”
《살아남는 중입니다》는 ‘사라지는 것과 남아 있는 것’ 사이를 기록한다. 지금 이곳에서 사라진 것, 여전히 남아 있는 것, 그리고 새롭게 생겨나는 것들을 함께 바라보며, 그 사이에서 가능한 삶의 형태를 묻는다.
Yeonggwimi-myeon is a village built around ginseng, potatoes, corn and Korean cattle, but as the population declined the number of children dropped sharply. Many schools closed, and the cultural and leisure places that once shaped children’s daily lives — snack shops, stationery stores — disappeared with them.
In response, residents built their own alternatives. The Yeonggwimi Care Center, started by parents, became the first all-day care centre in Hongcheon County — a safe place for primary school children to study, play and rest after school. Later, the youth space Ggumteul opened for those who had moved on to middle school; running four days a week, it became a rare place to eat, play, rest, meet one another and grow.
The exhibition begins from exactly this point.《Still Surviving》is not simply a story of facing hardship but a cheerful inquiry into ways of living newly in a world where things have disappeared. The artists share their own methods of survival, while children and residents imagine how they adapt and live within the world they experience.
The “survival” spoken of here is not only heavy or pessimistic. It can be funny, warm, silly, absurd, even joyful. Inside it, though, lies an important question about how we live: where, and how, are we surviving right now?
The exhibition records the space between what disappears and what remains — looking together at what has gone from this place, what still stays, and what is newly appearing, and asking what forms of life are possible in between.
‘꿈틀’을 열심히 이용하는 청소년이 어느 날 이런 이야기를 했다. “아빠가 꿈틀이 뭐하는 곳이냐고 물어서 청소년들이 쉬는 곳이라고 했더니 가지 말래요.” ‘노는 곳’이라고 하려다 왠지 가지 말라고 할 것 같아 ‘쉬는 곳’이라고 돌려 말했는데 돌아오는 대답은 역시나 ‘가지 마’였다는 것이다.
청소년들이 ‘쉰다’는 것의 의미를 어른들은 이해하지 못한다. 하지만 청소년들에게도 쉼은 필요하다. 세상을 새롭게 배우고 접하는 과정에서 이들은 혼란스럽다. 나름의 속도로 삶의 방식을 익혀가는 데는 늘 어려움이 따르는 법이다. 자기만의 성장통을 겪고 있는 청소년들에게 ‘꿈틀’은 잠시라도 숨을 돌릴 수 있는 공간이다.
‘꿈틀’을 한 마디로 정리하기란 쉽지 않다. 지역 청소년들을 위해 만들어진 공간이고, 다양한 것을 배우고 경험하는 곳이며, 방과 후 안전하게 쉴 수 있는 쉼터 — 여러 표현을 써 보았지만, 질문을 반복해 듣다 보면 설명은 간결해진다. “청소년들이 자유롭게 이용하는 곳이에요.”
‘꿈틀’은 두 가지 측면에서 ‘살아남는 중’이다. 첫째, 이용하는 청소년들이 살아남는 중이다. 안전하고 편한 공간이었던 집은 청소년기에 다르게 다가온다. 갈 곳이 없다고 느낄 때, 잠깐 숨 쉴 공간이 필요하고 그 공간이 ‘꿈틀’이다. 둘째, 하루하루 운영하며 살아남는 중이다.
A young person who often comes to Ggumteul once told us: “My dad asked what Ggumteul is, and when I said it’s a place where teenagers rest, he told me not to go.” She had almost said “a place to play,” then chose “a place to rest” instead — and still the answer came back: don’t go.
Adults do not understand what “rest” means for teenagers. But young people need rest too. Learning and meeting the world anew is confusing, and finding one’s own pace of living always comes with difficulty. For young people going through their own growing pains, Ggumteul is a space to catch a breath.
It is not easy to sum Ggumteul up. A place made for local youth; a place to learn and experience many things; a shelter to rest safely after school — many phrasings have been tried. But hearing the question again and again, the explanation grows simple: “It’s a place young people use freely.”
Ggumteul is “surviving” in two senses. First, the young people who use it are surviving. The home that was safe and comfortable feels different in adolescence; when they feel there is nowhere to go, they need a space to breathe — and that space is Ggumteul. Second, Ggumteul itself is surviving, day by day, in the running of it.
<Black Box – 없는 풍경>은 존재하지 않았던 풍경을 소리로 기록하는 작업이다. 바닷새의 울음, 산 속에서 사는 벌레들의 소리, 빗소리, 사람들의 웅얼거리는 소리 등이 모순적 조합을 이루는 ‘없는 풍경’의 소리를 들을 수 있다. 이 소리들은 태안, 북한산, 남한산성, 서울 도봉동, 홍제동 등에서 녹음되었다.
동시에 이러한 소리들은 환경 파괴와 서식지 감소로 인해, 미래에 실제로 들을 수 없게 될지도 모른다는 의미에서 ‘없는 풍경’의 소리이기도 하다.
후속작 <Black Box – Bremer Soundscape>는 이러한 경험을 보다 참여적으로 확장한다. 브레멘에서 채집한 자연의 소리와 도시의 인공 소리를 6×5 그리드에 배치하여, 사용자가 웹 화면 속 칸을 클릭하면 소리가 반복 재생되도록 만들었다. 청취자는 자신만의 ‘브레멘의 풍경’을 구성하게 된다.
<Black Box – Absent Landscape> records, through sound, a landscape that never existed. Listeners hear the cries of seabirds, insects in the mountains, rain, and human murmuring in contradictory combination. The sounds were recorded in Taean, Bukhansan, Namhansanseong, and in Dobong-dong and Hongje-dong in Seoul.
At the same time, they are the sounds of an absent landscape in another sense: because of environmental destruction and habitat loss, they may genuinely become unhearable in the future.
Its successor,<Black Box – Bremer Soundscape>, extends the experience into participation. Natural and artificial sounds collected in Bremen are laid out in a 6 × 5 grid; clicking a cell on the web loops that sound, so the listener composes their own “landscape of Bremen.”
나는 영귀미면에서 중학교를 다녔다. 읍내 학교에 가거나, 마을 학교에 가거나 선택지는 두 가지뿐이었다. 중학교 생활은 즐겁기도 했지만 늘 외로움이 따라다녔다. 겉으로는 친구들과 잘 어울렸지만, 마음 한켠은 언제나 혼자였다.
채식을 하던 시절에는 도시락을 싸와 교실에서 몰래 혼자 점심을 먹었다. 생일이 3월이라 학기 초, 친구들과 친해지기도 전에 지나가 버렸다. 비 오는 날 우산이 없을 때는, 마지막까지 학교에 남아 있다가 결국 가방을 두고 비를 맞으며 집으로 걸어갔다. 누군가 데려다 주겠다는 제안을 자존심 때문에 거절했기 때문이다.
몇 주 전, 홍천 관내 중학교 통폐합 기사들을 보았다. 내가 다녔던 동화중학교도 대상에 포함되어 있었다. 내가 다닐 때만 해도 한 반에 20~30명은 있었는데, 지금은 한 학년에 학생이 거의 없는 경우도 있다고 했다. 〈중학교에서 살아남기〉는 나의 개인적인 서사에서 시작하지만, 지금 이 지역의 학교 현실을 함께 담는다. 더 넓게는, 각자가 사회 속에서 어떻게 살아남고 있는지를 묻는 작업이다.
I attended middle school in Yeonggwimi-myeon. The choices were simple: the school in town, or the one in my village. Life there was sometimes joyful, but loneliness always lingered. Outwardly I got along with friends; inside, part of me was always alone.
During the years I was vegetarian I brought a lunch box and ate alone in the classroom. My birthday falls in March, so it passed at the start of term before I had become close to anyone. On rainy days without an umbrella I stayed at school until last, then walked home in the rain, leaving my bag behind — because pride had made me refuse a lift.
A few weeks ago I read articles about middle schools in Hongcheon being merged and closed. My own school was on the list. When I was there, a class had twenty or thirty students; now some year groups have almost none. The work begins from my personal narrative but also holds the present reality of schools in this region — and, more broadly, asks how each of us is surviving within society.
“우리는 사랑을 줄 수 있어”라는 제목이 누군가는 어렵게 느껴질 수 있을 것이다. 하지만 평소에 잘 생각을 안 하고 있었을 뿐, 우리는 일상을 살아가다 보면 많은 누군가에게 소소한 사랑을 주는 예쁜 마음을 가졌다.
단순하게 누군가의 생일을 축하해주기도 하고, 누군가가 두려움에 떨고 있으면 화이팅이라고 외쳐주기도 한다. 이런 게 사랑인가 싶지만, 관심을 주는 것이 얼마나 힘이 되어주는지 깨달으면 느껴질 것이다. 거창한 것만이 사랑인 줄 알지만, 의외로 단순하고 소소한 순간들을 주고받다 보면 이런 것도 사랑이구나를 깨닫게 된다.
미니북 속 고양이들의 단순한 그림체와 화사한 색감을 따라가다 보면 “어, 이거 나도 경험해 본 내용인데?” 하고 겹쳐지도록 만들었다. 한 권에서는 주인공 고양이가 사랑을 주는 모습이, 다른 한 권에서는 친구 고양이들에게 사랑을 받는 모습이 담긴다. 이 책 속의 고양이처럼, 많은 사람들도 알고 보면 예쁜 사랑을 많이 받으며 살아간다는 소소한 공감과 위로를 건네고 싶었다.
The title “We Can Give Love” may feel difficult to some. But it is only that we rarely think about it: living our everyday lives, we already carry the lovely impulse to give small love to many people.
We wish someone a happy birthday; we call out encouragement to someone who is afraid. It may not seem like love — until you realise how much strength attention gives. We tend to think love must be grand, but in exchanging simple, small moments we come to see that this, too, is love.
Following the simple drawings and bright colours of the cats in these mini-books, I hoped readers would think, “I’ve experienced this too.” In one book the main cat mostly gives love; in the other, it receives love from its friends. Like the cats in these pages, many people are in fact living surrounded by lovely affection — a small comfort I wanted to offer.
생존키트: 지구에서 살아남기 위한 나만의 상상키트 만들기 (진행 박주희·이진영) — 전 지구적 기후위기 속에서 “내가 살아가는 마을”인 영귀미면을 다시 바라본다. 기후변화, 미세먼지, 쓰레기 문제, 해수면 상승 등 지금보다 훨씬 어려워질지도 모를 미래 환경을 상상해보고, 그 안에서 ‘어떻게 살아남을 수 있을까?’라는 질문을 던진다.
아이들은 자신이 상상한 환경 문제를 설정하고, 그 상황에서 살아남기 위해 꼭 필요한 ‘생존 키트’를 직접 구상하고 그려본다. 키트에는 도구, 음식, 의복, 기계, 동물친구, 특별한 능력 등 무엇이든 들어갈 수 있다. 영귀미면은 농업과 축산업이 중심이 되는 마을이기에, 아이들은 인삼·감자·옥수수·사과·한우 같은 지역 자원이나 밭, 비닐하우스, 축사, 트랙터 등의 요소를 재료나 아이디어로 자유롭게 활용할 수 있다. 이 키트를 통해 ‘혼자 살아남기’보다는 ‘함께 살아가기’를 상상해보는 기회로 확장된다.
Survival Kit: making my own imagination kit to survive on Earth (led by Joohee Park and Jinyoung Lee) — In the midst of the global climate crisis, participants look again at Yeonggwimi-myeon, “the town where I live.” Imagining a future environment made far harder by climate change, fine dust, waste and rising seas, they ask: how can I survive?
The children set their own environmental problem and design and draw the survival kit they would need. The kit may contain anything — tools, food, clothing, machines, animal friends, special powers. Since Yeonggwimi is centred on farming and livestock, they were free to draw on local resources such as ginseng, potatoes, corn, apples and Korean cattle, or on fields, greenhouses, barns and tractors. Through the kit, the exercise expands from “surviving alone” toward imagining “living together.”
미션 1: 코드 영귀미 001 (기획 장민정) — 영귀미면에서 살아가는 방식을 만들어온 조직과 사람들을 관찰해 보고서 형식으로 기록하는 프로그램. 첫 번째 관찰 대상은 사회적협동조합 ‘새끼줄’이었다. 새끼줄은 작은 초등학교의 불 꺼진 도서관에 불을 밝히기 위해 점심시간 사서 봉사를 하러 모인 엄마들의 발걸음에서 시작되었고, ‘모든 아이는 우리 모두의 아이’라는 마음으로 2018년 교육공동체가 되었다. 지금은 ‘영귀미 돌봄터’와 청소년공간 ‘꿈틀’을 위탁 운영한다.
Mission 1: Code Yeonggwimi 001 (curated by Minjung Jang) — A programme observing and recording, in report form, the organisations and people who have shaped ways of living in Yeonggwimi. The first subject was the social cooperative Saekkijul (“Straw Rope”). It began with mothers volunteering as librarians at lunchtime to light up the darkened library of a small primary school, and in 2018 became an educational community founded on the belief that “every child is all of our child.” Today it runs the Yeonggwimi Care Center and the youth space Ggumteul.
