The story began at the water’s edge

The first exhibition of ‘2025 Monthly Yeonggwimi’ begins by the village stream. In the past, at the heart of Sokcho 1-ri stood the laundry site. It was more than a place for washing clothes — it was where women gathered to share their days, to speak of their burdens, and to support one another through stories. The words exchanged there, sometimes lighthearted and sometimes heavy with sighs, served as emotional support and a thread that wove the community together.

Even today, stories continue to flow through the village. Spaces like the community care center, the Seobyul Café and Ggumteul have become new gathering spots — places where lives intersect, emotions are shared and memories accumulate. If the laundry site once symbolized physical survival, these spaces now embody emotional survival, becoming the new centers of shared stories and connection.

The laundry site sits where an old stream once flowed — a place once called Wongaewool. Though now just a gully behind the elementary school, it used to collect water from Sonigol, Meokbanggol and Soksaeul. Over time the watercourse shifted and the stream gradually disappeared. Yet the laundry site remains, holding the memory of the village. Locals once called the waterway Wonpo — perhaps there was once a small port at its end.

This exhibition looks closely at the lives sustained through speech — at how speaking, at times, was more essential than food, and how the presence of someone to speak with was like an anchor in life. From this water’s edge, we hope to bring these stories back into the present and continue them in the places of today. We hope your memory, too, will linger in this flow.

How to Cross the River>
2025. Printed on cotton hand towels, 260 × 280 mm, 9 sheets

We try to cross the river in various ways. We are afraid of the river because we don’t know how wide or deep it is, nor do we know what lies beyond it.

But perhaps the river is actually quite narrow and shallow — shallow enough for us to simply walk across. Nine hand towels hung at the laundry site show nine ways of crossing a river, in the very place where washing was once hung out to dry.

We Anchored Ourselves to Each Other’s Islands>
2025. Mixed media, variable size

This work is a metaphor for the moment when lives that existed like separate islands meet at the water’s edge of the laundry site and drop anchors toward one another. Connected floating islands, with translucent brackens blooming on top, picture a “moving community” in which people reflect and lean on each other.

It is built from three formal elements: the anchor, the support and the moving island. The anchor stands for the choice to hold one’s place even in a current; the support, for the relationships that carried people through; the moving island, for a life that stays afloat even as it sways.

Bracken is a symbol of tenacious life that grows even in barren ground, and in poorer times it was the wild green women could most easily gather to feed their families. It stands here for the stubborn vitality — and the invisible devotion — of the women who held life together at the laundry site.

Chatter Travels Through the Laundry Bat>
2025. Wire, yarn, wood, variable size

A friend once shared a vivid childhood memory: elderly women gathered at the village laundry site in Yeonggwimi-myeon, chatting softly as they washed clothes by hand. Today laundry is a private, practical task; in the past it was a communal ritual — an emotional and social exchange embedded in everyday life.

The laundry bat, partner to the washboard, was more than a tool: it was a medium in which lives and feelings were layered. People shared their lives while beating cloth, striking harder or more slowly according to their mood, expressing what words could not.

A broken bat, in particular, is a trace of long use and a hint that even more stories have accumulated inside it. Weaving thread around these halved bats, the artist brings a fading communal feeling back into the present. The work is both a mourning for what has been severed and a modest proposal for the warm solidarity that still remains.
