《Strangers of Providence》는 낯선 땅 프로비던스에서 이방인으로 살아가는 감각과 그 속에서 생겨나는 연대의 가능성을 모색하는 전시다. 감독 배가희는 자신이 경험한 타지에서의 어색함과 소속되지 못한 감정을 출발점 삼아, 카뮈의 『이방인』 속 뫼르소와 프로비던스의 창립자 로저 윌리엄스를 주요 서사로 삼았다.
우리는 종종 불편한 순간에 사회의 가치를 의심하게 되고, 그 순간 익숙한 자리에서도 이방인이 된다. 로저 윌리엄스가 정착민과 원주민의 ‘평화로운 공존’을 주장했던 프로비던스라는 도시의 역사는, 오늘의 소외와 이해라는 주제와 겹쳐진다.
이 전시는 사회적 규범에서 벗어난 존재들이 어떻게 낯섦을 감각하며, 이를 넘어 이해와 연대로 나아갈 수 있는지를 사유한다. 우리가 품고 있는 ‘낯섦’은 고립이 아닌 연결의 시작일 수 있음을 말하고자 한다.
《Strangers of Providence》explores the feeling of being a stranger in a foreign land and the possibilities of forming new connections in that state of unfamiliarity. Director Kahee Bae began from her own experience of awkwardness and non-belonging abroad, taking Meursault of Camus’ The Stranger and Roger Williams, the founder of Providence, as its two guiding narratives.
We often question the values of a society in moments of discomfort — and in those moments we become outsiders even in familiar places. The history of Providence, where Roger Williams advocated “peaceful coexistence” between settlers and Native Americans, is layered onto the contemporary themes of alienation and understanding.
The exhibition asks how those who fall outside social norms sense that unfamiliarity, and how they might move beyond it toward understanding and solidarity. The strangeness we carry can be the beginning of connection rather than isolation.
작가들은 먼저 서로의 작업을 1차적으로 공유하고, 그 안에서 발견한 타자의 해석을 각자의 방식으로 다시 해석해 2차 작업을 이어가는 방식으로 참여했다.
한 사람의 작업이 다른 사람의 출발점이 되는 고리가 전시 전체를 하나로 엮는다. 배가희는 박주희의 할머니들이 노동하며 불렀다는 노래의 가사를 천에 자수로 옮겼고, 박주희는 문성주의 ‘강’을 빨래터의 물가로 가져왔다. 문성주는 백승원의 흑백사진을 참고해 자신의 드로잉을 흑백으로 다시 인쇄했고, 백승원은 배가희의 튤립에서 ‘쓰이고 버려지는 것들’을 보았다. 황재원과 Ana Popescu는 ‘시간’이라는 공통의 주제를 서로 주고받았다.
The artists first shared their existing works with one another. Each then reinterpreted, in their own language, what they had found in someone else’s work — and produced a second piece from it.
The chain in which one artist’s work becomes another’s starting point binds the whole exhibition together. Kahee Bae embroidered the lyrics of the songs Joohee Park’s grandmothers sang while working; Park took Seongjoo Moon’s ‘river’ and carried it to the village laundry site. Moon reprinted his drawings in black and white after Seungwon Baek’s photographs; Baek found in Bae’s tulips the things that are used and discarded. Jaewon Hwang and Ana Popescu exchanged a shared subject: time.
